An innovate and healthy ice cream, crochet bear hoods

Date: 04/03/2016 | Posted by John Garton

New members have joined Genuine Jersey – bringing more talent and diversity to the producers’ association.

The Genuine Jersey mark is the guarantee of local provenance and is recognised as a byword for the best that the Island has to offer. To carry the mark, goods have to be reared, grown or caught in the waters around Jersey or created by local producers.

There are now over 180 Genuine Jersey members. An independent survey released last year revealed that an increasing number of Islanders and visitors want to buy and taste local products. It also showed that a third of local residents said that seeing the Genuine Jersey logo would ‘definitely’ make them more likely to buy the product.

New members include:

Minioti – Anna-Liisa Boletta and Natasha Dowse

Qualified paediatric speech and language therapist Anna-Liisa and personal trainer Natasha produce a healthy and tasty ice cream for children, although it’s suitable for the whole family. Minioti has teamed up with Jersey Dairy to produce their luxurious brand, which comes in three flavours: classic vanilla, rich chocolate and fruity strawberry.

Anna-Liisa said: “We started this project because we are passionate about feeding our children healthy food and saw a gap in the market for products that could combine indulgence and health. We want to show that companies can and should have a responsibility towards the general wellbeing of children and manufacture healthier products for them. We are both mums so we genuinely care.

“We want to sell our ice cream locally but we’d also like to export it to different markets around the world.  We want to show the great produce and innovation that can come from this small island.”

Away with the Fairies – Emma Le Monnier

Woodland whimsy and a sprinkle of fairy dust inspire the creations of Away with the Fairies. Emma, a teaching assistant, is best known for crafting crochet bear, fox and pixie hoods for adults and children as well as mushrooms and little lavender-filled owls.

Emma said: “As a small child, I was fascinated and intrigued by fairy tales and fairies. This fascination has endured through to adulthood and my love of the environment, along with a generous helping of fairy dust, are inherent in my creations.

“A happy coincidence of a gift of a crochet cushion kit led me to a love of crochet and all things woolly. I now spin on a walking wheel for Jersey Heritage, needle and wet-felt anything from robins to flowers with wool tops and, of course, crochet with wool and even fabric. Away with the Fairies is ever evolving and a range of animal hoods is in the process of being dreamt up along with other woolly creations.”

It’s A Sign – Chloé Fosse

Full-time mum and sign maker Chloé makes wooden signs with popular Jersey phrases. She also makes up her own phrases, which have become really popular, such as “There’s a little island, just nine by five, with an important question … what time is High Tide?”. In addition to the Jersey signs, Chloé takes personalised and bespoke orders.

Chloé said: “I am self-taught and tweak my designs all the time as I get new ideas.  I have been doing this now for the last two and a half years and it is great as I can work around looking after my little boy. Most of my orders come through Facebook, so I compile a list of what I am going to be making and start by preparing the wood. I use reclaimed pine which is cut for me by Acorn Woodshack. Once I have painted the background, I come up with the design which I then paint onto the sign by hand.”
