Yet another record number of growing kits are being delivered to Island primary schools this week as growing commences in the seventh Genuine Jersey Royal Potato Growing Competition.
Each year more children take part and this year more than 7,000 pupils in 258 classes in all 32 primary schools are competing, compared to over 6,000 from 30 schools in 2012.
The competition is organised by the Genuine Jersey Products Association and sponsored by Belles Fleurs Nursery, and is supported by The Jersey Royal Company and the States of Jersey Public Health Department.
The schools competition comprises three categories:
This week, each class will receive a growing kit comprising two Jersey Royal seed potatoes a container, polystyrene chips, compost and fertiliser. Judging takes place in May as part of the Jersey Food Festival.
All the Constables are taking in the parochial competition and they will receive their growing kits next Monday at a meeting of the Comité des Connétables.
In the media competition battle also commences this week, pitting Jepson the JEP bear – assisted by Caroline Moody, JEP news hound Phil Jordan, the ladies from the BBC, Sara Palmer and Carrie Cooper, Alasdair Crosby of Rural Jersey (with son, Ned) and Gwyn Garfield-Bennett of Connect, against each other in what promises to be a hotly-contested contest.
