JCG Students Learn How to Run a Genuine Jersey Business

Date: 03/04/2008 | Posted by John Garton
More than 90 students from Jersey College Girls are teaming up with members of Genuine Jersey to learn about the challenges facing local businesses.

This initiative is part of an education and learning strategy which aims to develop year nine students’ business skills.  The students have been divided into 18 teams and each one will be partnered with a member of Genuine Jersey.

Teams will each receive a loan of £200 which has been funded by Enterprise and Business Development.  Over the coming months, they will have to produce a business plan, negotiate buying stock from their business partners and decide how best to market their product at a Genuine Jersey food and craft fair in June.  The team which makes the most profit will receive a prize from HSBC Bank plc.

Ben Bennett, Head of Business and Enterprise Education at JCG said: “This is a fantastic initiative which gives our students real experience of running a business and the associated risks involved.  We are grateful to Genuine Jersey members for agreeing to take part and to HSBC for their sponsorship and for providing practical business advice to the students.”

The initiative is being launched tomorrow (4th April) with a visit from Joe Evans, HSBC Assistant Area Manager for Personal Financial Services and Sam Dawes, Business Banking Specialist.  They will be speaking to students about setting up a business and advising them on how to keep financial accounts.

Ken Syvret, Chairman of Genuine Jersey, said: “We are delighted that so many of our members are participating in this project.  It is a wonderful opportunity for young people to get involved in business while learning about our community and the range of goods produced or grown in our Island.”

The Genuine Jersey Food and Craft Fair will be held in the grounds of JCG on 14th June 2008.
