Date: 02/05/2008 | Posted by John Garton
Classic Herd in St Peter has been certified as an organic farm by Organic Farmers & Growers Ltd (OFG).

The leading UK organisation is one of a number of certification bodies accredited by Defra and is approved to inspect organic production and processing in the UK and the Channel Islands.

Classic Herd is owned by Darren and Julia Quenault.  They have had 350 vergees of land and their livestock under conversion for the past two years.  This has involved providing a detailed audit of their farming methods and products.

Julia Quenault said:  “It has been a lengthy process but we are delighted to have finally been certified by the OFG and to be able to use their logo on our dairy products.  We are also looking forward to supplying organic meat.  Pink veal will be the first available as livestock must be born on to certified organic land for the meat to qualify.”

Ken Syvret, the Chairman of Genuine Jersey said: “It is wonderful to see one of our members qualify as an organic farm.  Classic has worked tremendously hard to convert their land and they are to be congratulated for their efforts.”

All Classic Herd milk, cream, natural yoghurt and cheese will carry the organic label. This includes the award winning Classic Brie, Golden Blue and Camembert.
