My name is Helena Mundy, I’m a textile artist and the co founder of ‘The Art Rooms’, a community of local artists and makers. I’m currently working with eco print which is a process through which the pigments and tannins in leaves are transferred onto fabric. Every piece is unique and individual.
When I graduated from Highlands I set up the Art Rooms as a place to be creative with other like minded artists as the kitchen table wasn’t very inspiring. I love having people around me to bounce ideas off.
The first task of my working day is to walk my dog, Bonnie. This gets me out into nature where I get my inspiration from and local leaf collection for printing. Mother Nature never ceases to amaze or inspire me now and always. I then head to my studio.
The best thing about working for yourself is you choose what needs doing whether it’s preparing leaves for storage or printing, sewing, framing artwork or the never ending admin jobs.
I work with 100% silk for my scarves and cushions as the natural fabric responds to the tannins in the leaves much better for a clear print. Opening a fresh bundle from the pot is always magical. You never know what you’re going to get. I try to use natural products where possible.
My gift boxes are made from 100% recycled card and I hand make the brown paper envelopes for the smaller scarves for that personal touch. The water in my printing pot is also reused several times to cutdown on waste. As a textile artist, discovering eco printing was inspiring and encouraged me to experiment a lot more with my local leaves and plants. It has reignited my passion for natural fabrics and printing. The results on paper are just as magical as fabric, a lovely way to display a print from your favourite leaf or create a unique card for that someone special.
To anyone starting out as an artist or maker I’d advise them to be true to yourself and be confident in your creativity, everything else will follow suit.
My work can be viewed at my studio in Payn Street, various local markets and my Etsy shop, HelenaMundyTextiles.
